Cy-Fair ISD officer shoots driver who attacked him after crash at administration building, authorities say

Police Chief Eric Mendez said the officer was out patrolling district properties at around 10:30 a.m. when he noticed a crashed-out vehicle in the parking lot.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An officer with the Cy-Fair ISD Police Department shot and injured a man who attacked them in the parking lot of the Windfern Administration Annex parking lot, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Cy-Fair ISD Police Chief Eric Mendez said one of his officers was out patrolling district properties at around 10:30 a.m. when he noticed a crashed-out vehicle in the parking lot of the administration building. He said it appeared the driver had lost control of his car on Windfern Drive, drove through the parking lot, hit a tree, and spun in front of the building.

There was another person who drove to the scene that Mendez said may have been involved in the fight. It's unclear what their relation to the man was. He was treated at the scene and released.

The officer tried to get information about what happened from the driver, who Mendez said seemed to be agitated. That's when the driver reportedly attacked the officer.

According to Mendez, a struggle ensued and at some point, the officer shot the driver. The driver was taken to an area hospital in what Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called serious condition.

Mendez said the officer was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a deputy was driving by the building as this was happening and rushed to the scene. That deputy also sustained minor injuries in the struggle and was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.

The Cy-Fair ISD Police Department is investigating the case alongside the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Mendez said the officer who shot the man has been with the department for a few years.
