Police search for driver after 3-year-old hit by car, HPD says

Houston police said the girl was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. They said she was alert and breathing.

HOUSTON — Police searched for a driver Monday after a 3-year-old child was hit by a car during a hit-and-run crash in northeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police said it happened just before 10:30 a.m. on Peachtree Street near Hirsch Road.

Authorities said a 10-year-old and a 3-year-old were playing in the street when a silver Toyota SUV drove by and hit the younger child.

Police said the child was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. They said she was alert and breathing but was crying and said she was in a lot of pain.

Neighbors said cars speed through the area all the time. They said they've tried to get sidewalks put in but have been unsuccessful. They're concerned another incident similar to the one on Monday could happen again.

"We tried (to get sidewalks), but the city, they never actually did anything," Emilano Calderon said. "I can't let them (children) go outside anymore. I'm going to be really concerned with that, you know?"

The SUV involved was last seen heading north on Peachtree, police said.

Houston Police Department officials said drivers need to take extra precautions when going through neighborhoods.

"Any residential area -- make sure you slow down... look all different ways. There might be kids playing, some of them small kids, so just be extra cautious when you're driving around residential areas," HPD Assistant Chief Ernest Garcia said.
