Court reporter in Houston fined over transcript

A criminal court reporter in Houston with more than 40 years on the job has been fined $4,000 and put on a year of probation over a missing trial transcript.

HOUSTON -- A criminal court reporter in Houston with more than 40 years on the job has been fined $4,000 and put on a year of probation over a missing trial transcript.

Don Rymer retired after being indicted last April on a state jail felony charge of tampering with a government record.

His attorney, Brock Thomas, declined to discuss what happened to the transcript or whether Rymer transcribed his notes. Thomas says his client regrets the circumstances that led to this situation.

The plea deal reached Friday says Rymer, who worked for Harris County since 1968, took responsibility for a missing misdemeanor assault trial transcript as the defendant sought to appeal.

Rymer, who cannot work as a court reporter for a governmental body during his year of probation, could not immediately be reached for comment.
