More from the Astrodome Conservancy:
Founded in 2016 by Houston preservationists Phoebe Tudor, Minnette Boesel and Judy Nyquist, the Astrodome Conservancy joins Harris County as an advocate for the Astrodome. Since its inception, the Conservancy has played an integral role in securing the Astrodome’s future, including assisting with safeguarding the venue as a protected State Antiquities Landmark through the Texas Historical Commission. The Commission voted unanimously to approve the landmark status in January 2017.
“The Astrodome is an important landmark to Harris County and Texas and is part of our unique culture. As the first fully enclosed, domed stadium, it was once home to professional sports teams like the Houston Oilers and Astros, organizations including the Rodeo, as well as hosting countless signature events that shined a global spotlight on our area,” said Phoebe Tudor, Chair of the Astrodome Conservancy. “Our mission is to preserve its legacy and creatively engage Houstonians at the Astrodome once again.”
The Astrodome Conservancy is designated as the County’s official non-profit partner to assist with transforming the Astrodome into a multifunctional event space. Through tax-deductible donations, grants, and crowdfunding, the Conservancy will help activate the Astrodome, presenting affordable, creative, artistic and family-friendly public events.
“The Astrodome Conservancy is going to help us ensure that the Astrodome is no longer just an unused county building housing only memories and equipment,” said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. “Going forward, the Astrodome will once again be a proud centerpiece of NRG Park producing revenue and badly needed public event space.
Domecoming is sponsored in part by Harris County, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and 8th Wonder Brewery.
