HOUSTON – Charges have been filed against the chase suspect who tried to get away from the cops by jumping into the Brazos River Monday.

Jose Luis Orta, 46, is charged with evading arrest, felony possession of a weapon and two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

HPD officers were trying to serve a warrant on Orta when he sped off in a pickup truck.

Police say he pointed a shotgun at the officers who were chasing him.

After the wild chase through Brazoria County, Orta bailed out of the truck and jumped into the river at FM 521 near the Fort Bend County line.

He swam for awhile before trying to pull himself up the steep, slippery bank. That didn’t work out.

When officers tracked him down, Orta stripped down to his boxers and agreed to surrender. They threw him a rope and he was able to get out.

Police say they found drugs and two shotguns in Orta’s truck.
