Bank clerk shot during robbery inside Houston Kroger store

Gunfire erupted in a Southwest Houston Kroger Friday when a couple of robbery suspects shot a bank clerk inside the store.
A bank clerk was shot during a robbery inside the Kroger in the 9900 block of Westheimer in Southwest Houston.

HOUSTON -- Gunfire erupted in a Southwest Houston Kroger Friday when arobbery suspect shot a bank clerk inside the store.

FBI agents say the suspect entered the store around 2p.m.and went to theFirst Convenience Bank branch counter. He demanded money, but wasn't happy with the amount he got so he fired a shot into the floor.

The bullet ricocheted and hit a female clerk in the leg. She was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be OK.

A secondshotfired by the robber went into the ceiling and ruptured a water pipe that flooded thestore.

It happenedat the Kroger in the 9900 block of Westheimer near Gessner.

I heard a boom and I thought it was a balloon, and then I heard, 'shots fired shots fired' and I sort of ducked, said Dean Edwards, a regular customer.

Houston Police saidthesuspectescaped out the store's back door where a getaway driver was waiting.

Customers were rushed to another area of the store until Kroger employees and police were sure the danger was over.

I come to that store every single day, Edwards said. You hear about it all the time. You never expect it's gonna be your Krogers.

The 66-year-old woman was still shaken after the robbery.

I was kind of scared at the time, Edwards said. I m 66, but I still want to be around for a few more years.

Police hope surveillance cameras will help them identify the suspects.
