There are some items you can take from hotel rooms when you leave. You'll get billed for some others!

Feel free to take the shampoo, but a pillow or towel? It could cost you.

HOUSTON — We have a warning for anyone planning to visit a hotel as summer winds down. Watch what you take home from the room!

Many of us have traveled in recent weeks or are still planning a trip before Labor Day. So if you find yourself in a hotel anytime soon, you should know about what you can take home with you and what you cant.

A new report by CheapAir.com says don’t be a hotel room hoarder, someone who takes home a few too many souvenirs.

So what are you allowed to take?

The report says you can take toiletries, including shampoo, body wash and lotion.  Bonus points if they’re upscale brands. Also, the report says you can take the stationary and pen. Nothing like a little notepad to remind you of your vacation. And then there are the key cards, especially if they are from Disney or Universal. Kids love those for the memories.

But from the “Doesn't that stink?” file -- what you should never take from a hotel.

First, there are the towels. Some hotels will bill you if they find bath towels missing. The same goes for pillows.  And those bath robes?  Take one home and face as much as a $200 charge on your bill!  As for the artwork in the room, leave it. Many hotels screw paintings to the wall so people don’t take them. Also, the mini bar drinks -- housekeeping counts missing bottles when you leave and most of them are two to three times the retail cost.

So stick to those small personal items and leave the big stuff. That way you don’t waste your money.
