Insurance companies stop issuing policies for high-theft Hyundai, Kia models

Several months ago, social media users posted instructional videos showing exactly how simple they are to steal.

HOUSTON — State Farm and Progressive have stopped writing new policies for popular models because they’re so easy to steal.

The vehicles include 2015 through 2019 Hyundai and Kia models.

The vehicles don’t have immobilizers that prevent theft if their key isn’t present. Several months ago, social media users posted instructional videos showing exactly how simple they are to steal. The Highway Loss Data Institute found that theft claims on these vehicles were almost twice as high as all other automakers.

State Farm and Progressive are only doing this in some markets but won’t confirm which ones. CNN reports that Denver and St. Louis are among them.

This decision only applies to new policies. If you have one of these vehicles, you can keep your existing policy and renew it as well.
