How to check if you have unclaimed money in Texas

The amounts range from $25, all the way to hundreds of dollars. It's money owed from government agencies to big box stores and even insurance companies.

HOUSTON — Free money! Who wouldn’t like some to start the new year off? Many Texans have unclaimed money and don’t even realize it.

Here’s what you need to do. Go to the Texas Comptroller’s website.

It’s the agency that keeps track of money and property that’s owed to people across the state. Type in your name, hit search and what comes back is a list of amounts owed to you.

The amounts range from $25, all the way to hundreds of dollars. It's money owed from government agencies to big box stores and even insurance companies.

If you find your name, hit claim, and fill out the application. You can track your claim’s progress online. 

It’s important to remember while some companies may offer you a paid service to help claim your cash, the process is free if you choose to do it on your own.
