Houston printing business helping others facing hardship during pandemic

AlphaGraphics Central Houston is offering discounts to businesses hurting financially due to COVID-19.

HOUSTON — As businesses across Harris County scramble to get ready for Judge Lina Hidalgo's new mask mandate, one Houston printing company is keeping up with those changing demands by providing COVID-19 signage.

Five days a week, for nearly 13 hours a day, a giant ink printer located at AlphaGraphics Central Houston has been pumping out thousands of coronavirus labels every week since the start of the pandemic.

It's a company that's been around for nearly four decades with three locations inside the 610 Loop - Memorial Park, Greenway Plaza and Downtown. The facilities provide a variety of services, including printing, marketing, signage, and promotional products—and now COVID-19 materials

"It's been a huge change," said owner Joel Kurian, who took over 9 months ago. "We've had to pivot, but I think we did a really good job from transitioning from what was pre-COVID-19 print and signage to now the new normal."

From offering social distancing floor decals to hand sanitizing signs and more, right now 85 percent of the company's revenue is generated from designing and printing signs related to the virus, helping local businesses across the city stay open safely.

"It's a good feeling," said general manager Allen Cook.

And with a new mask mandate about to take effect on Monday, the company says it's ready to assist businesses with those needs, too, all while giving back.

AlphaGraphics Central Houston has been providing discounts to businesses facing financial hardships and soon they'll donate a portion of its COVID-19 sales revenue to the Houston Food Bank.

"Especially having been in the community for almost 40 years, we feel it's important to give back and help support the community that's help support us for the last four decades," said Kurian.
