How to spot a deal and avoid scams during Amazon Prime Day

Don't assume Amazon is the cheapest place to get that item you're looking for during Prime Day.

HOUSTON — Set your alarm, Tuesday is Amazon Prime Day with two days of non-stop deals!

Not only did we find out what you should expect to see, but also what to avoid.

At an Amazon pickup store, shoppers are looking forward to this year's Amazon Prime Day, which runs July 12 and 13.

"I use Amazon a lot, so I might check it out," said Megan Allen.

Allen uses Prime Day to stock up home goods.

"Things for around the house, items for decorating, pillow cases and things like that," Allen said. "It's a good deal."

Besides home goods, Consumer Reports says you can expect big markdowns on Amazon devices like Echos, Ring doorbells and Amazon Fire TVs.

Based on prior years, Consumer Reports also expects discounts on smart watches, robot vacuums and instant pots.

But Amazon doesn't announce its deals in advance and the deals change every hour, so you have to check back.

And don't forget, you must be a Prime member to participate.

Meanwhile, other retailers like Walmart know that Prime Day is happening, so they're battling for your business by offering deals of their own at the same time.

PC Magazine's Chandra Steele says if you have a particular product in mind, shop around. Don't assume Amazon will be your cheapest option.

Lastly, be wary of fake Prime Day ads, especially on social media.

"Don't click directly from something else, because it could be a phishing link," Steele says. "It could be a deal that doesn't really exist."

Steele also says don't forget you can keep deliveries safe from porch pirates by choosing an 'Amazon Day' so it all arrives at once, when you expect it.

"They'll try to ship everything to you on that day," Steele says. "So you can guarantee you know that you'll be home."

If you can't be home for an Amazon Day, send the items to a locker or pickup counter near you. That way your Prime Day deals are safe, so you don't waste your money.
