Planet Fitness offering free summer passes for teens

The High School Summer Pass program invites students between 14 and 19 to work out for free at any Planet Fitness location from June 1 to August 31.

HOUSTON, Texas — Planet Fitness is offering free workouts for high school students throughout the summer, aiming to improve mental and physical health in young adults while school is in recess.

The High School Summer Pass program invites students between 14 and 19 to work out for free at any Planet Fitness location in the United States and Canada from June 1 to August 31.

This marks the fourth year the company has adopted the program.

Starting Monday, teens can register for the program before getting club access on June 1.

All participants will have access to free fitness training with certified fitness trainers and free workout plans geared toward high school students.

With the launch of the program during Mental Health Awareness Month, Planet Fitness says it allows teens the chance to prioritize their mental and physical wellness while school is out of session.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) said in an April 2024 study that physical fitness among children and adolescents may help protect against mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

"Many teens continue to be impacted by the long-term mental health impacts from the pandemic, yet studies show that exercise can have a significant, positive impact on teens’ overall wellness. We look forward to welcoming High School Summer Pass participants into our clubs to support them in their health and wellness journeys," said Planet Fitness Interim Chief Executive Officer Craig Benson.

According to the American Heart Association, only 25% of teens are completing the recommended one hour of physical activity a day. Experts say the cause stems from an increase in screen time along with a decline in school physical education programs.

Teens under 18 in the U.S. and 19 in Canada must sign up with a parent or guardian.

Once waivers are filled out, teens can work out without an adult present.
