HOUSTON — Many Houston families spent part of their Christmas Day at Discovery Green.
Some families experienced the holiday activities -- from ice skating to popcorn -- for the first time. But to others, the cool weather and ice skating rink in one of downtown’s biggest parks brings back memories of past Christmases.
All the families KHOU 11 spoke to agreed that spending time with family and friends was important this holiday season.
“I miss it," said Anita Ponce, a Houstonian who know lives in Kansas due to the military. "This is home so it’s like very nostalgic in a way. The memories come back. We used to come here all the time and ride bikes in downtown for fun."
“I’ve never been to this spot," said Trinka Bourne who just moved from California to Conroe this year. "It’s my first time ever. I love it. I love the weather. I love that it’s cold and it feels like Christmas.”
Bourne said she was most thankful to be spending time with her grandkids who skated around the ice rink at Discovery Green.
“To see there’s joy in the holidays, and not just being sad or being alone it's wonderful to see the amount of people are out here because it means they have family or friends or people to be with,” Bourne said.
“It’s a really great time to just take it all in," Darius Hutson said. "It feels like this Christmas is not about gifts, getting presents family. It's about spending time with the ones you love."
The Discovery Green Ice Rink remains open through January 28.
