HOUSTON — A year of challenges capped off with gratitude, as a Houston man and his family finally got to thank some of the first responders who helped save his life. This Thanksgiving, they have a lot to be thankful for.
Blessings have shown up in abundance for the Eidman family ever since Nadine called 911 on December 7, 2023. Her husband John had suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke.
"We were on the verge of losing him and I’m not exaggerating. He came from nothing and they didn’t give us much hope," Nadine told us.
John doesn't remember that day, but his family will never forget the fear of losing the boss they lovingly call "El Jefe."
"That’s exactly how he always has operated and continues to till this day. Someone who is that rock upon which we rely for guidance, support strength, and love," son-in-law Adam Arguelles said.
About half a dozen first responders from the Houston Fire Department rushed to the family's home and took quick action to save John's life. The family delivered a meal on Tuesday to show their immense gratitude.
"John is with us. That is something that none of us in the family take for granted for a second."
The family says they pass Fire Station 28 often but didn't realize until recently that the crew who saved John’s life was dispatched from it. They say it’s a wonderful feeling seeing first responders become friends and family.
"We know we’re doing important work with those moments of gratitude actually just a reminder that kind of remind you that you are making a difference," Dennis Cartie with the Houston Fire Department said.
John's recovery isn't done but he's making progress and is determined to regain his voice, another hurdle in a year full of them.
"Because of his hard work, his blessings and determination truthfully. And the love and prayers of everybody," Nadine said.
For this family, the love flows freely. And in the spirit of thanks and giving, you can do a lot with love.
"Just do the best you can, and you pray for the best and have the courage and the strength, the faith to deal with it."
