What the heck is Worcestershire sauce?

Where did Worcestershire sauce get its name?

There's a pretty good chance you have it in your kitchen and there's an even bigger chance that you don't know how to say it or where it's from.

With its punch and umami flavor, here's a little bit more about the condiment with so many uses. It's a fermented liquid condiment generally made from vinegar, molasses, sugar, onion, garlic, tamarind and anchovies. Some also use lemon flavoring and soy sauce.

It is commonly used in barbecue and Bloody Marys, among other uses.

As it turns out, the sauce got its name from an English town just south of Birmingham, where the locals can pronounce the sauce's name with ease.

Worcestershire sauce was invented by pharmacists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins. They made it in the city of Worcester in Worcestershire, England.

Now, the sauce is used all over the world in countless dishes.

Pronouncing it isn't as easy as learning its history.
