Say it ain't so! Crawfish prices expected to be more pricey this season

Last year's drought is to blame, experts say.

The price you typically pay for a 3-pound bag of crawfish may be a little more this season.

There's currently a crawfish drought, raising prices to levels more expensive than usual.

"It's supply and demand," said Chuck Sartori, owner of Shaver's Catering in Shreveport, Louisiana. "If there's no supply then you know how people are around here. There's a huge demand. It's going to drive the price up. The quantities aren't there."

A Louisiana State University AGCenter extension agent said last year's drought is to blame.

"Those rice fields were stocked with crawfish or seeded. We call it either stocking or seeding back in April or May for anticipation for production this winter," said Todd Fontenot. "Those rice fields were then drained as I mentioned to be harvested in late July, August and September for the most part. So the problem that arose is once they're harvested that is when we did not receive any rainfall."

It's unknown how much Houston businesses are charging for crawfish, but northwest Louisiana businesses said their customers can expect to pay at least $15 per pound.
