Detox your kitchen for a healthier life

Can’t lose those extra pounds? Feeling sluggish? Toxins in your kitchen might be to blame

HOUSTON — When it comes to your health, many people worry about the quality of the food that goes in our mouth, but the tools in your kitchen are just as important.  Heavy metals, plastics, and other items can poison your health and weight loss efforts.

The First Lady of Nutrition, Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS, had some alarming information about the toxins lurking in our kitchen.  She talked with Deborah Duncan about how we get rid of these toxins and rev up our metabolism.  Gittleman includes this information in her new book “Radical Metabolism: A Powerful New Plan to Blast Fat and Reignite Your Energy in Just 21 Days”.  For more information, log on to RadicalMetabolism.com. Gittleman suggests getting rid of aluminum foil and aluminum cookware.  Heavy metals like aluminum are a major source of toxicity.  They irritate mucus membranes, destroy pepsin (a key digestive enzyme) and hamper’s our body’s use of vitamins and minerals.  Aluminum can accumulate in our kidneys, brain and GI tract and has been linked to brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s.

Aluminum is found in pots, pans, teakettles, measuring cups, cookie sheets, graters, strainers and pie tins.  Gittleman suggests doing the “magnet trick” to see if your cookware is aluminum.  If a magnet sticks, there is no aluminum in that product.

Another item Gittleman says to beware of is cast iron.  This is not the type of iron our bodies can use.  It is toxic to our bodies and is stored in our liver and kidneys.  An alternative to cast iron is enameled iron, such as Le Creuset, Chasseur, or Staub.

Gittleman also suggests avoiding microwave ovens.  Some studies say that microwaving food destroys important nutrients, but also toxins can leach into food from the containers they are cooked in.  Some of these toxins include BPA, Benzene, Toluene and Xylene.
