GALVESTON, Texas — If you see what looks like a box washing up along a Texas beach, there’s a reason.
According to the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, 80 of these objects were released from Chandeleur Island, Louisiana, and around half were heading to Texas shores. According to the organization’s Facebook page, as of Monday, four had already been found here.
The objects are models of sea turtle carcasses and they were put in the water by NOAA Fisheries scientists so they can understand how weather patterns and ocean currents influence yearly sea turtle strandings.
If you come across one of these objects, the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research wants to hear from you. Call 1-866-TURTLE-5 so that a dropoff location for it can be set up.
