Houston SPCA moves 18 rescued horses to higher ground ahead of Beryl

The SPCA's equine manager said horses and other animals can often sense weather before it happens.

HOUSTON — The Houston SPCA’s equine team was busy on Sunday getting ready for Beryl's tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain. They moved 18 rescued horses from their remote rehabilitation property to their Equine Rehabilitation Center on the Houston SPCA campus. Currently, they have a total of 24 horses,

The SPCA's equine manager said animals can often sense weather changes are coming.

“Horses and animals like that, they really pick up on the weather before it happens. So a lot of them are already a little bit more edgy and amped,” Houston SPCA Equine Manager Linnea Wood said. “And I feel like all of them have been handling it very, very well.”

The SPCA also has three pigs, 12 chickens and a peacock in their care at the rehab center.

If needed, they have boats on standby to respond to high-water pet rescues.
