5 must-see pop culture items from the Smithsonian's black history museum

Nestled on Washington's National Mall is the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, a striking, 400,000-square-foot building whose bronze-painted aluminum lattice exterior pays tribute to ironwork made by slaves in Charleston and New Orleans, and whose angular walls evoke women's hands lifted to the sky in prayer. The museum opens to the public on Sept. 24 and aims to tell America's stories of "yesterday, today and tomorrow" through the eyes of African Americans.
