We often use the term “breast cancer” as all-encompassing, but there are numerous ways the disease can affect women...and men, as well. Breast cancer can begin in different areas: the ducts, lobules and the tissue in between the two. There are 2 main types of breast cancer: Non-invasive and Invasive.
Non-invasive means that the cancer has not spread to areas surrounding its origin, such as a Ductal Carcinoma, which starts in the milk duct. This type hits 1 out of 5 new breast cancer cases. Non-invasive cancer treatments include a lumpectomy, mastectomy, hormonal therapy after surgery and clinical trials.
Invasive breast cancer means that the cancer has spread to surrounding tissue. This can include Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma, Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, Inflammatory Breast Cancer and Metastatic (Stage 4). The good news is that the disease is NOT hopeless! There are treatments for invasive breast cancer such as chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, hormonal, targeting and clinical trials.
Of course a healthy lifestyle is step one in increasing the prevention of breast cancer. It’s also essential post-treatment.
