First Saturday Arts Market is Houston's original monthly outdoor art market and celebrated 20 years in business, March 2, 2024. Since its establishment in 2004, First Saturday Arts Market has provided a platform for artists to showcase their work on a monthly basis, pioneering the concept of regular outdoor art events in Houston.
A complete artist roster is updated monthly on the website. A food truck is on site each month and local musicians often perform original music.
The next First Saturday Arts Market in the heights will be on April 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Julie Mahler creates art work from old books and folded paper. She started folding paper as an art form in 2019 when she decided to fold 1000 origami cranes as a form of meditation. Once Mahler started folding paper, she became fascinated by the process. The artist started folding old books, initially all in one style of fold, and then in more complex patterns. Mahler quickly wanted to design and create her own book-folding patterns. A key feature of her work is up-cycling and repurposing books and paper. The book art comes from a love of books and she uses books that would otherwise be thrown away.
