Murder By The Book & House of Coffee Beans: A new chapter for two long-standing Houston institutions

Murder By The Book & House of Coffee Beans are now under the same ownership.

HOUSTON — McKenna Jordan has always been an avid reader, and spent many hours as a child going to the bookstore with her dad to get the latest R. L. Stine books. A few years later, while McKenna was working to earn her master's degree, she needed a part-time job, and after shopping at Murder By The Book for years, she was given the chance to work there. Six years later, she became the owner.

Murder By The Book is one of the nation's oldest and largest mystery specialty bookstores, established in 1980 by Martha Farrington, and bought by McKenna in 2009.

The store stocks over 25,000 books, new & used, hardbacks & paperbacks, first editions, collectibles, gift items, mystery magazines and more. They also host over 200 of the hottest mystery, crime and fantasy authors for book signing events every year.

The bookstore has been the neighbor of House of Coffee Beans for years. When the longtime owner decided it was time to retire, McKenna and her husband, Curry Duffey, decided to buy the business.

House of Coffee Beans has some of the freshest, locally-roasted coffee in town. They also sell high-quality beans from all over the world, plus lots of dark roasted coffees, original blends and flavored coffees for more casual coffee drinkers.

They are now both open at the same time, Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and for select events, the coffee shop now stays open late to provide their famous iced coffees and other beverages to those waiting to see their favorite authors.
