HOUSTON — Founded in 1901, The Houston Chronicle is one of the largest newspapers in the U.S. There have been many monumental moments in its almost 123-year history. It started with a reporter covering the first oil well at Spindletop. Marcellus Foster gambled a week's pay to buy an option on one of the biggest oil strikes in history. He used his earnings to start the Chronicle. Since then, the paper has covered every big story of its day, from opening the port of Houston, the creation of the world's largest medical center and how the the civil rights movement played out in our city. But it wasn't until this year that the newspaper got its first black news columnist, Joy Sewing.
