Today, in the umpteenth example of tweeting-before-thinking, we have as Exhibit A the redoubtable Cher, who tried to pay tribute to the victims of the Istanbul airport attack but ended up tweet-slapped and sorry.

Today, in the umpteenth example of tweeting-before-thinking, we have as Exhibit A the redoubtable Cher, who tried to pay tribute to the victims of the Istanbul airport attack but ended up tweet-slapped and sorry.

Soon after suicide bombers killed more than 40 people and wounded more than 140 at the international terminal of Turkey's Ataturk International Airport on Tuesday, Cher urged her more than 3 million followers to pray for the victims.

Note the two emojis, one depicting an old-fashioned cannonball-style bomb and the other a fiery explosion.

"Insensitive!" tweeted many critics in response.

Cher, 70, is a major user of Twitter (more than 18,000 tweets) and uses emojis all the time to keep her tweets to 140 characters (she also sends out a lot of all-caps tweets).

On Wednesday, after thinking it over, she tweeted an apology and explanation.
