HOUSTON — Katiera Winfrey is excited about her return to her hometown as a reporter at KHOU 11 News. She grew up on Houston’s Northeast side and is a graduate of Texas Southern University.

Winfrey's most recent roles were as a fill-in anchor and as the specialty content multicultural reporter in Indianapolis. There, her stories centered on social justice, culture, arts and community. Her background as a general assignment reporter has given her the tools to cultivate that role, and she said it's a passion that’ll continue to drive her work.

Winfrey's early career included a stint as an assignment desk assistant at KHOU. Her career has taken her around the country, picking up multiple Society of Professional Journalists Awards and Emmy nominations along the way. She started in a couple of small Texas towns and moved to Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Indiana.

In seventh grade, she knew she wanted to become a journalist. She built on that dream by working on the radio in high school, multiple publications, and KTSU 90.9 FM while in college, and as a member of the Texas Southern University Debate team, under the tutelage of the late and legendary Dr. Thomas F. Freeman.

In her free time, Winfrey loves to visit museums, travel, read, and spend time with friends, family and her 13-year-old rescue dog, Sarabi.

She is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
