Two dead, rabid bats found in La Porte

La Porte police warn residents not to touch ill or dead bats after two of the mammals tested positive for rabies this month. LPPD asks citizens who spot ill or dead bats to call police.

The La Porte Police Department says two dead bats found in the city in recent weeks have tested positive for rabies.

The first dead bat was found March 8th in the 500 block of Fairway Drive. A week later a dead bat was found in a garage on Eagle Lane.

Further tests found that both bats had rabies, according to authorities.

Police do not think any humans were exposed to the deadly disease.

Police is asking anyone in their city who sees a dead or sick bat to call them immediately at 281-471-2141, and an Animal Control officer will collect the bat and have it tested for rabies. They warn not to touch the bat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most bats don't have rabies, and even among sick or dead bats that are tested, only 6 percent test positive for rabies. Nevertheless, bats account for 90 percent of rabies cases, according to officials.
