Rosenberg getting free help with wild hog problems

Trappers plan to capture wild feral hogs that are ripping up yards and gardens outside homes near Mons Avenue and Louise Street in Rosenberg.

ROSENBERG – Wild hogs irritating Texans is nothing new. However, a new attack could bring relief for homeowners tired of living with torn up yards in Rosenberg.

And get this, the best part may be the price.

Trappers accepted the job free of charge.

Hogs are ripping up yards and gardens outside homes near Mons Avenue and Louise Street in Rosenberg.

“It’s happened almost every night the last couple of weeks,” Roy Martinez a homeowner said.

Martinez saw two Monday morning. They’ve ruined his grass for five years.

Around the corner, a neighbor wrapped electric fencing around his house to keep away hogs. Martinez worries about what could happen.

“The worry is neighbors walking their dogs and a hog comes out and they get attacked,” he said. “On the other side of the weeds you have a lot of people who walk over there.”

Though legal to hunt Feral Hogs in Texas, Rosenberg city council refused to allow it within city limits to protect people from crossfire.

The city hired hog trappers in years past. They plan to try it again after getting an offer to provide the service free of charge.

Rosenberg Animal Control officers believe hogs are migrating from a wooded area near Mons Avenue.

Starting Saturday, trappers plan to bait hogs into an open field. Then, over the course of several days build a circular trap around the area. Once the trapper has an accurate count and corner all the hogs in the trap, they will try to herd them into trailers to carry them away to a slaughterhouse.

Though Martinez has a smaller cage-like trap in his yard that’s never caught a hog, he hopes the city’s new attack works.

“(Seeing hogs destroy yards is) frustrating,” he said. “Hopefully (the city) figures something out.”
