The child's age was not immediately confirmed by the department, but family members at the scene say he was 10 years old.
The two-alarm fire was reported at the Country Club Village Apartments on S. Gessner south of Bellaire. Witnesses tell KHOU 11 News some third-floor residents had to jump to safety as their homes went up in flames before 8 a.m. Christmas Eve.
The injured firefighter is expected to survive, according to HFD.
There are now volunteers on the scene helping to assist displaced families, and firefighters are gathering toys to replace gifts that were destroyed.
Mayor Sylvester Turner tweeted early Monday afternoon that the Houston firefighter injured in the fire was going to be okay.
“I just learned firefighter Arthur Guerra from Station 76-B is going to be ok. Please keep all first responders in your thoughts and prayers. Today is a tough day,” the mayor said in a tweet.
