BAYTOWN, Texas - A Baytown Police officer received a well-deserved award Thursday night: the Police Purple Heart.
Officer Ruoming Bi was honored Thursday for his heroic actions back in September.
Officer Bi found a drunk driver passed out behind the wheel with the engine still on. When the officer tried to turn off the car, the driver woke up and attacked him.
The driver got in a couple of good hits before he was detained, putting Officer Bi in the hospital.
Even during the attack, Officer Bi said he had to make sure the driver was OK.
“He is the offender, but ultimately, a member of the public, and it’s my duty to protect the public,” Officer Bi said.
The Police Purple Heart is a very prestigious award. Officer Bi is only the fifth Baytown officer in history to receive one.
Officer Bi said he is honored, but he was just happy to do his job.
