Less than a week after reaching “crisis capacity,” the Harris County Animal Shelter is still filled beyond capacity with animals ready for adoption or foster.

There are currently 149 dogs and 106 cats available for adoption or foster as of Friday afternoon. The shelter, which is built to house 150 animals, is currently holding over 300, including 108 that were taken in Thursday.

“At this time, the only way we are going to be able to expand our capacity for animals and lifesaving efforts is if the community will step up and open their homes by adopting an animal or temporarily fostering an animal,” said Kerry McKeel, senior communications specialist for the shelter.

Since Sept. 1, the shelter has taken in 967 animals—589 dogs, 372 cats and six others.

Summer is a historically an exceptionally busy time for animal shelters, shelter officials said. Among the reasons animals were surrendered at the Harris County Animal Shelter since Sept. 1 are having too many animals at home, not having enough time or because of a move.

If you’re able to adopt or foster, the shelter is located at 612 Canino Road in north Houston. Adoption hours are 1-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information on temporarily fostering, tap/click here.

The Harris County shelter isn’t the only local animal shelter in need.

The Fort Bend County Animal Shelter issued a plea for help Wednesday as the shelter reached critical capacity with surrenders and strays.

The Fort Bend shelter is waiving all adoption fees, which include all vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and a heartworm test.

The shelter is located at 1210 Blume Road in Rosenberg. Kennel hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday. It's closed on Sundays.
