HOUSTON — A significant sinkhole was the talk of the street, in part of the Heights, Tuesday night.

The hole, on Rutland Street near W 16th Street, opened up around 4 p.m. Rutland Street was closed down near the intersection for safety.

A Houston Public Works inspector estimated the sinkhole to be at least 15 feet deep, adding that it was strange the dirt inside the hole was dry.

A nearby business owner tells KHOU 11 News, the section of the street was underwater during Harvey, but homes in the area didn't suffer flood damage.

A metal plate has been put in to cover the sinkhole, a temporary fix until a contractor can be brought in to fix the damage.

Neighbors say they noticed the cracks in the asphalt and a dip in the street Sunday.

It’s unclear how long it will take for the sinkhole to be permanently fixed.
