Now that is a sight for sore eyes. Finally, some real chilly Fall air on the map. It's nearing the Canadian border now and will head south next week, reaching Houston in the September 27-28 timeframe. You can expect to see pods of migrating hawks, those famous 'v' lines of geese and those wonderful Monarch butterflies in our area soon as the arrival of colder air gets the southern migration under way.
It's the Monarch's that I am most ready to see. The butterfly weed I planted (above) in my backyard two years ago has exploded with flowers. Migrating hummingbirds have already found it ahead of the Monarchs which should arrive in large numbers soon. This one must have got an early start!
Monarch's that live east of the Rocky Mountains will migrate south, now through October, and over winter in the mountains of central Mexico. Look closely at the map (above). One branch of their migration route flows along the Texas gulf coast. That 's why we see so many of them around here this time of year.
