HISD to keep superintendent search closed

Critics say an open search is more transparent, but the majority decided a closed search will encourage more candidates to apply.

HOUSTON - The HISD School Board voted 6-3 Thursday night to conduct a closed search for a new superintendent.

The closed search means the applicants will be kept confidential.

Critics say an open search is more transparent, but the majority decided a closed search will encourage more candidates to apply.

The previous superintendent, Dr. Richard Carranza, left for New York City Public Schools in March. In October, the HISD board switched interim superintendents during a raucous meeting, but board members later apologized for their behavior and reinstated Dr. Grenita Lathan.
