Dressed to Kilt honors Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, Marcus and Melanie Luttrell and Trae Tha Truth among those honored at Dressed to Kilt event held at Million Air Houston facility, Hobby Airport. Dressed to Kilt celebrates Scottish fashion and is the largest Scottish fashion event in the world.

HOUSTON - On Saturday, April 7, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, was honored at “Dressed to Kilt,” a fashion show celebrating country lifestyle clothing and the fashion of outdoor sports – “From the Highlands to Houston – Country Cool.”

Dressed to Kilt is the largest and most prestigious Scottish fashion event in the world. Traditionally hosted in New York City, the event moved to Houston in 2018 and served as the inaugural event for the opening of the new Million Air Houston facility at Hobby Airport.

Mattress Mack, the “Man of the Evening,” is beloved in the Houston community and was recognized for being one of Houston’s heroes for his commitment to serving the community, his work with Hurricane Harvey relief fundraising and his national and local philanthropic presence.

His many past charitable contributions include:

  • Provided a shelter for evacuees during Hurricane Harvey at his business
  • One of the largest contributors to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo at over $4 million dollars
  • Annual Christmas give-away furnishing hundreds of homes with furniture for past 30 years
  • Co-founded the Peace of Mind Foundation for those affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Funded St. Luke’s Mobile Stroke Unit
  • Helped start the Kickstart Kids Program in Houston
  • Furnished George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University
  • Donated thousands of dollars of furniture to hundreds of teacher lounges in Houston area schools
  • Recipient of Mental Health Association Award in 2005
  • Underwrote wolf exhibit for The Houston Zoo
  • Built and paid for tennis facility at Yates High School
  • Fed 25,000 people Thanksgiving dinner for several years
  • Bought 10,000 toys for needy children during the holiday
  • Other contributions too numerous to mention

Dressed to Kilt dignitaries included Viscount William Garnock, Scottish Royalty and Liz Hanna, direct descendant of John Muir.

Local athletes who walked the runway included Eve Muirhead, Olympic Medalist for Curling.

And, Carl Lewis, Olympic Track & Field Champion who won nine Olympic gold medals, one Olympic silver medal, and 10 World Championships medals, including eight gold. His career spanned from 1979 to 1996. Lewis became an actor after retiring from his Olympic career and has appeared in a number of films.

Marcus and Melanie Luttrell – former Navy SEAL and his wife – Founder of the Lone Survivor Foundation, were also honored. Marcus is a former United States Navy SEAL who received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his actions in June 2005 against Taliban fighters during Operation Red Wings.

HPD First Responders

The HFD's Pipe & Drum Marching Band, the British American Business Committee, Scottish Development International, the St. Thomas Episcopal High School Pipe & Drum Marching Band, the Big Easy Ranch, and first responders from both the HFD and the HPD were also part of the Dressed to Kilt event.

The beneficiaries of the 2018 event are Lone Survivor Foundation and the Navy SEAL Foundation. The Houston based Lone Survivor Foundation provides therapeutic retreats for serve members and their families. The Navy SEAL Foundation is committed to America’s elite warriors, supporting Navy SEALS, their community and providing support to the families of the Navy SEALS in times of illness, injury and loss.
