HPD: Armed man surrenders peacefully after SWAT standoff in SW Houston

According to the Houston Police Department, it started around 9 p.m. when a female caregiver discovered that the homeowner's son was at the residence where he is not supposed to be.

HOUSTON – A SWAT standoff with an armed man barricaded in a southwest Houston home ended peacefully after the suspect surrendered Wednesday night.

According to the Houston Police Department, it started around 9 p.m. when a female caregiver discovered that the homeowner’s son was at the residence where he is not supposed to be.

This happened at a home located at Summit Place and Renaissance.

Police said the son, who has a history of mental illness and appeared to be intoxicated, started threatening the woman, so she called 911.

When HPD arrived at the scene, officers were able to get the woman and the father out of the home safely, but the son retreated to a bedroom in the back of the home. Police said they heard the suspect handling a firearm, so SWAT was called to the scene.

After about an hour of refusing to come out, police said the suspect surrendered peacefully. SWAT officers said they did recover a weapon and a loaded magazine from the bedroom.

The suspect faces a charge of making terroristic threats and will also be evaluated for mental health.
