What’s new this year at Houston Zoo Lights

Zoo Lights starts Saturday, November 17 and last until Sunday, January 13. This year, gates will open at 5 p.m.

HOUSTON – ‘Tis the season for chilly weather, gumbo and Christmas lights!

For the 7th year in a row, TXU Energy is transforming the Houston Zoo to a winter wonderland for their annual Zoo Lights celebration. And get this, for the first time in Zoo Lights history, Santa is stopping by to take photos with families on select nights.

The holiday tradition features 15 miles of sparkling LED lights, twinkling replicas of zoo animals, the return of Candy the Zoo Lights Zebra and a 33-foot tall Holiday Tree. Other features include the Holiday Train Village presented by Macy’s and the Enchanted Forest presented by King & Spalding.

Zoo Lights starts Saturday, November 17 and last until Sunday, January 13. This year, gates will open at 5 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. On prime nights, the event will stay open until 11 p.m.

You may be wondering what are the best nights to go and avoid a huge crowd. Houston Zoo spokesperson Jackie Wallace said Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are usually the best nights to beat the crowd.

She also said you can get deals by going during the week because those nights are considered "value nights."

There are no animals during the Zoo Lights tour. To see the animals, visit the Houston Zoo during the day.
